Robert Fogel’s « The Slavery Debates A Retrospective – 1852-1990 » gives us another example of a trend increasingly dominant on the field of slavery studies: to present the moral options as the key factor of abolitionism.
Analysing this way, the historical particularities of the Atlantic slave trade as well as of the slave plantation system gets lost. In fact, the choice between slavery and free labour was not a universal option (there has been several modes of slavery) and free labour was not, historically, the opposite of slavery.
The points raised in this paper intend to show, through the case of forced labour in Portuguese colonies, some problems arising from these abstract notions.
