Slavery is an historical given fact in all African regions that were controlled, in former times, by the potential colonies. The theme has had a lot of references till nowadays and was approached in the context of colonialism especially in what concerned the slave trade process. It is clear that slavery represents a reality that has a leading place in the books of history, anthropology, sociology and philosophy in the African context. In reality, this theme has been studied, in our opinion, in a sensationalist way creating a certain pessimism, resentment and even an inferiority complex in many Africans who, in this perspective, cling, with a certain ease, to a spirit of revenge giving way to racist feelings.
Thus, we notice that, although not hiding the historical truth, the usual approach to this problem has not been, in many circumstances, very coherent because the negative part has always been accentuated.
Meanwhile, and considering that the history of Africa in the post-colonial era is not in itself very recommendable due to a kind of neo-colonialism that has established itself in the continent which did not bring happiness to the peoples who expected it after the independence, it is natural that the history of Africa be rethought for a better reassessment of the problem of slavery in the black continent. Furthermore: in a time when modernity is more and more a reality in the domain of globalisation and with the advance in social sciences articulated with Hermeneutics and epistemology, history is continuously questioned in a logical way allowing for new considerations in the new reading of these events, now that the world context is completely different than before.
A lot has changed. The history of Africa deserves a new interpretation in order to create new references in the study of these themes.
With a coherent and updated Hermeneutics questioning the history of Africa and without twisting the facts there is a logical need of rereading historical facts. In this line of thought, philosophy and sociology offer safe criteria to access the events of yore, living the present but set on the future which must be supported by other ideals: the reconstruction of the continent.
Thus, we can move from the “misfortunes” of the past onto a current dignified life that must include the project of building a new Africa set on progress and development, therefore rebuilding its history. These are the challenges that must be recognised when we study the history of the black continent today, especially in what slavery is concerned.
